Jody and I have had a dream of living in the mountains and owning a small Airbnb property devoted to cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts. So as part of one of our vacations, we decided to check out a tiny Getaway House cabin in Lisbon, OH, near Beaver Creek State Park. The Getaway House’s location was a perfect stop on our way to having some rollercoaster fun at Cedar Point.
What is a Getaway Cabin?
A Getaway House is a small rectangular cabin of about 140 to 200 square feet. The company was started in 2015 by Jon Staff. Jon grew up in rural Minnesota, spending a lot of time in nature. After experiencing burnout in a startup company, he quit his job and started traveling in his Airstream. In the summer of 2015, Jon and his college buddy, Pete Davis, launched Getaway. Getaway’s mission is to allow people to unplug and rest and foster inspiration, creativity, and connection. Currently, Getaway has 31 locations listed on its site.
Booking and Staying
Booking a stay at a Getaway House is extremely easy, cost-friendly, and welcoming. After selecting the dates of your stay, you’ll receive an email confirmation and further instructions. Then, within 24 hours of your visit, you’ll receive a text with the location and the door key code. So simple! The only thing I wish was included in the instructions was the latitude and longitude of the site. I had to search on Google Maps to narrow down the location.
When I reviewed the cost of staying at a Getaway House, the price can range from $129 to $329 each night. For the experience, my family and I felt the price was right. For an extra $40, you can bring your fur baby. Of course, we had to bring our lovable English Golden Retriever, Ellie.
Arrival
We arrived pretty late at the Getaway House but were greeted with a warm welcome. One of the welcome texts mentioned that the light would be on if we were going to arrive late. Such a simple but welcoming start.
After opening the door and being impressed with the aesthetics of the place, we noticed a welcome package including food for smores and doggy treats. These small details make the stay so much more memorable.
What’s it Like to Stay At A Getaway House?
We were very impressed with the design. You could tell that a lot of thought went into the design of the tiny building and the surroundings.

Basics
Though the cabin is small, it has everything you need to unplug, from a small refrigerator, stove, utensils, towels, sheets, running water, shower, small heater, beds, and basic cooking essentials. We chose the cabin with the queen bunk beds. Simple but perfect for a short stay.
Interior
The interior was designed using shiplap pine combined with a large panel of glass at the back of the Getaway House. The house was perfectly positioned to overlook the woods behind it. The large window at the back of the house framed Mother Nature and removed any visual distractions to interrupt the peaceful view.
Outside
A lot of thought was put into the outdoor layout of the Getaway property. The Beaver Creek Getaway was carved into the backside of a farm. Each property had plenty of space between them to provide privacy, peace, and quietness. Each tiny building had a firepit picnic table and chairs. There was no need to bring any wood. All was provided at a small cost. Convenience and peace!
Conclusion
I give the Getaway House two thumbs up. The stay’s communication, aesthetics, layout, and purpose were right on. You could unplug and enjoy your time. The place was perfect for a small family with a fur baby.
After staying at the Getaway House, Jody and I talked more about the dream of having a small Airbnb Getaway House. The Getaway House was such an inspiration on how a stay doesn’t have to be exotic. There’s beauty in simplicity. Of course, our version would need to be more bicycle-friendly, positioned perfectly along the side of a mountain with proper bike storage and a small gym to do the MCC workouts. I can dream 🙂
What’s been your favorite place to stay that is all about unplugging, family, and biking?
Good write-up. I absolutely love this site. Stick with it!
Thanks for the kudos!
